Why "Pata de Perro?"

Literally meaning "a dog's paw," our blog's name, Pata de Perro, is a slang term that refers to someone who can't stay in one place for too long, who likes to go out and explore the streets, "una persona callejera," a nomad, someone that's always wondering around the world.

It's also the title of a ska  song by a popular Mexican rock group called Maldita Vecindad that gives you an idea of what the term means. It talks about how everything in the old neighborhood is just getting older and friends are getting married, men are getting fatter, nothing stays like the good old days and "era mejor viajar"- it was better to travel.  The chorus says "Vente calypso tour ehhh" which means "Come to the Calypso Tour" which according to the youtube comments possibly refers to an around- the- world boat trip that used to leave from Uruguay.
Here's a link to the the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNqazrKvQVI.

This term is one that we- Julio and Bethany- identify with greatly at personal levels and as a couple. As someone who left home at 18 to live in LA for 7 years and then Mexico City for 4.5 years, I, Bethany, haven't stayed in one place too long and moving around has been a defining part of who I am.  Julio too, has always felt a call to other cultures and diverse places as he planned and went on 5-6 international trips to Europe and South America before meeting me. His parents have even called him Pata de Perro more than once.

Having met in Mexico City, we have already had quite a few adventures together, and now before starting a new adventure in Chicago, we are taking advantage of our transition  to explore new territories and experience even more of the world as patas de perro.

We hope to use this blog to not only share our world adventures, but also our life adventures as we start this crazy "trip" called marriage- a bicultural and bilingual one at that.

Here we goooooo!!!

Before heading to the airport
