Arrival to japan

Kind if like our start in nz, we experienced the extremes in our first night in japan.

Our time in japan started on a sad note. We went straight from the plane to the Japan Rail desk at the airport to exchange our japan rail vouchers that were sent to our Chicago address that we would use to go to various places around japan. We were standing in line when all the sudden a middle aged man in line behind us collapsed. I think he was sitting in front Of Julio on the flight from Australia . The Japanese people he was with started doing CPR and then japanese airport personnel also started CPR and called a stretcher and ambulance to take him away. We started outbourtime in japan pretty shaken and wondering what happened and would happen to that man.

From the japan rail desk We bought our metro ticket to go to our hostel. The metro in Tokyo was one of the more confusing metros I've ridden on 1) there are two Metro companies and types of lines- Tokyo metro and tioi -and so you have to make sure you buy a ticket that applies to the company's line that you are going to use or buy a pass that covers both company's lines 2) there are different entrances to the different lines at the same station.  When I told Julio that he was getting the hang of it faster than I was he quite something he heard my dad say to Linda: "stick with me baby!"

After the bummer moment at the airport we had some lighthearted moments soon afterward. One was on the metro from the airport to the hostel of a slightly tipsy person with a Lucha libre keychain and his tipsy friends when they realized Julio was from Mexico.  They  lit up with excitement and started saying every Spanish word they knew, including, of course, cerveza. Then arriving to the hostel there was the night staff plus two guests in the common room that also were very excited that Julio was from Mexico. They repeated the Japanese name for Mexico - "mekeesko mekeesko" and the night staff person actually spoke quite a bit of Spanish.  Thus we had a good impression of the country by the time we called it a night..

That night before going to bed we thanked God for our lives and vowed to enjoy every precious moment we have in japan on our trip and beyond...
