Buddha's nostril

One day while staying in n Kyoto we made a day trip to Nara on train. It is a village of temples and famous for hundreds of deer roaming free and very friendly to people.

One temple we went to there is the Todaji temple with a 15 meter high Buddha and a gigantic wooden Hall to house it. The ticket claims it is the largest wooden structure in the world.

The ticket to enter the temple also lists some measurements of the Buddha. Length of head: 5.33 m. Length of ear: 2.54 m. It didn't list the height of the nostril but at the base of one of thge large wooden pillars holding up the temple, there was a hole that is said to be the size of his nostril. If you can pass through "Buddha's nostril," the legend says, you can reach enlightenment.
It was fun watching the crowds give it a try - especially tall men:

Then we made our way to Kasuga shinto shrine- a hike through some woods and over 3000 stone lanterns.
